About BackupAtlas

BackupAtlas is a reference for home backup power in the United States. It helps homeowners compare portable, inverter, and standby generators using the loads they actually need to run, the fuels they can store or connect, and the safe connection their home requires.

The site currently tracks 86 generators across 12 brands. Specifications are curated from manufacturer documentation and retain a link to the source. Our calculators turn those ratings into practical estimates for starting surge, 120/240 V requirements, fuel use, runtime, and operating cost.

How the site is made

Generator specification pages, comparison pages, and use-case rankings are generated from the dataset by templates; guides and glossary entries are written and reviewed by people. The methodology page documents the data pipeline — including how records are curated and what the verification flag means — and every formula, and the editorial policy explains how content is produced and corrected.

BackupAtlas is independently operated. No manufacturer pays for placement, and a product is not ranked more highly because it has an affiliate relationship — rankings are computed from published specifications alone. Planning estimates never replace an appliance nameplate, a generator manual, local code, or a licensed electrician's load and connection assessment.
