CO safety shutoff

A CO safety shutoff is a built-in carbon monoxide sensor that stops the generator’s engine automatically when CO accumulates around the unit — sold under names like CO-MINDER, CO Shield, CO Guard, and CO Sense. It is a backstop, not a license to run a generator near the house.

Generator engines produce enough carbon monoxide to be lethal in minutes in an enclosed space, and CO poisoning kills dozens of people in the US in a typical year, mostly after storms. Sensors that shut the engine down when concentrations rise appeared across the industry after 2018 CPSC and ANSI/PGMA G300 safety pushes.

The rule the sensor backs up: run generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, exhaust pointed away from windows and doors — never in a garage, even with the door open.

What the sensor does, and what it cannot do

An electrochemical carbon monoxide cell sits inside the generator’s housing, usually near the control panel. When ambient CO around the unit rises past the threshold the standard specifies, the controller kills the ignition and stops the engine, and most implementations latch out with a warning light so the machine cannot simply be restarted in the same spot. Two standards drive this: ANSI/PGMA G300 requires the shutoff, while UL 2201 requires the shutoff and additionally caps how much CO the engine may produce in the first place. A generator carrying only G300 has the sensor; one carrying UL 2201 has the sensor and a fundamentally cleaner engine. It is worth checking which is printed on the box.

The limitation is geometric. The sensor measures CO at the generator. It cannot measure CO in your basement. A generator on a covered porch, in a breezeway, under a deck, or in an attached garage with the door open can sit in enough moving air that the sensor never trips, while exhaust is steadily drawn into the house through a door gap, a dryer vent, or the negative pressure of a running bathroom fan. Shutdown protects the generator’s immediate surroundings; it does not protect the building, and the two concentrations can differ enormously.

It is also a machine that can fail. Electrochemical cells drift and dry out over five to ten years whether or not the generator is used, and the shutdown depends on a controller, wiring, and a relay that have all sat outdoors between outages. Treat the sensor as a backstop that catches a mistake you did not realise you were making — not as permission to place the generator closer than you otherwise would.

The numbers behind the 20-foot rule

CPSC testing has measured portable generators producing carbon monoxide at rates comparable to hundreds of idling cars, and has recorded lethal concentrations inside attached garages within minutes even with the door open. CO is colourless, odourless, and close enough to the density of air that it mixes rather than settling, so there is nothing to notice. Worse, the early symptoms — headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue — are exactly what a tired person in a dark house during a storm attributes to the storm.

The exposure figures are worth knowing. OSHA’s permissible exposure limit is 50 ppm averaged over eight hours. NIOSH sets the immediately-dangerous-to-life-or-health level at 1,200 ppm. Around 800 ppm brings headache and nausea within roughly 45 minutes and unconsciousness within a couple of hours; at several thousand ppm, which a generator in an enclosed space reaches quickly, death arrives in minutes. Residential CO alarms built to UL 2034 must sound within 4–15 minutes at 400 ppm and within 60–240 minutes at 70 ppm — deliberately slow at low concentrations to avoid nuisance alarms, which means a household alarm is a safety net rather than an early warning at generator concentrations.

Hence the rule: at least twenty feet from the structure, with the exhaust aimed away from every opening — doors, windows, soffit and crawl-space vents, dryer vents, window air conditioners. Never in a garage, attached or detached. Never in a basement, crawl space, carport, or breezeway. Never directly beneath an open window. Downwind of the house rather than upwind where you have the choice. And put battery-powered CO alarms on every sleeping level regardless of what the generator has: they cost about $25 each and they are the only layer that is actually inside the building with you.

Running one safely for days rather than minutes

Weather is where the twenty-foot rule quietly collapses. Generators must stay dry, and the instinct is to throw a tarp over one or tuck it into a shed with the door open — both of which trap exhaust around the machine. The correct hardware is a purpose-built open-sided generator canopy that keeps rain off the top while leaving all four sides open to airflow, positioned clear of the exhaust outlet. If the only dry spot is enclosed, the generator does not run.

Refuelling is the other thing that kills people during outages, and it is a separate hazard from CO. Shut the engine down and let it cool for five to fifteen minutes before adding gasoline; fuel spilled on a hot muffler ignites readily. Store fuel outside the living space in approved containers, and keep the containers away from the running generator. On propane this problem largely disappears, which is one of the underrated arguments for dual fuel.

Finally, the sensor is not a substitute for a plan made in daylight. Decide where the generator will stand before the storm, run the cords first, and make sure everyone in the house knows that a CO alarm means leave the building immediately and call for help from outside — not investigate, not open a window, not wait to see if it stops. Anyone who feels headachy or nauseated goes outside first and gets assessed second.
