Can a generator charge an EV during an outage?

Short answer: technically yes, but Level 1 charging from a properly configured 120 V generator outlet is usually the practical emergency choice. A 32 A Level 2 charger draws about 7.7 kW continuously, before the generator powers anything else. Confirm compatibility in the generator, EVSE, and vehicle manuals; a grounding or neutral-bond mismatch can make the EVSE refuse to charge.

Start with continuous watts

EV charging is a continuous load. A typical Level 1 cord drawing 12 A at 120 V asks for about 1,440 W for the whole charging session. Level 2 rises quickly: 16 A at 240 V is 3,840 W, while 32 A is 7,680 W. Use the EVSE's configured current, not the large number printed on a charger that can be turned down.

Estimate the energy you will actually add

Power is the rate; energy is power multiplied by time. Eight hours at 1.44 kW supplies at most 11.5 kWh before charging losses. At an example efficiency of 3 miles per kWh, that is roughly 35 miles of battery energy. Treat it as an emergency-range estimate, not a promise: charging losses, temperature, and the vehicle's efficiency all change the result.

Why a compatible outlet may still fail

A safe outage plan

  1. Check the generator manual for neutral, grounding, receptacle, and load instructions.
  2. Check the EVSE and vehicle manuals for generator use and input-power requirements.
  3. Start at the lowest supported charging current and monitor the generator load.
  4. Run the generator outdoors at the manufacturer- and CPSC-recommended safe distance from doors, windows, and vents; never in a garage, even with the door open.

Never backfeed a house through a receptacle. If the EVSE is hardwired, a permitted transfer arrangement and an electrician are part of the design. Add the desired charging load to the BackupAtlas sizing calculator and decide whether those few miles are worth carrying a much larger generator.
