Short answer: yes, but size for the starting surge, not the running load. A typical 3-ton central AC condenser runs at roughly 3,500 W but can surge past 8,750 W for the instant the compressor motor starts. Why central AC is a sizing trap

Putting it together
- 240 V is required. Central AC condensers are 240 V appliances; no 120 V-only generator can run one at any wattage.
